Darmstadt, Open space planning realization competition “Campusmitte Lichtwiese”

An orthogonal organization system was developed on the basis of the existing urban structure and the original landscape architectural idea, which is composed of orthogonal and landscape-free elements.

The strict order is primarily intended to provide orientation, make addresses and locations legible and allow a great deal of freedom of use.

The orthogonal grid is formed spatially by green fields and tree volumes. These two systems overlap to some extent, but always remain oriented to the grid.

A simple spatial typology was developed for the entire campus center.

A linear open space connects all adjacent squares and green spaces as well as the central buildings of the campus center.

The boulevard becomes the identity-forming backbone of the new campus center.

It is not only an access space, but also a public social space: seeing and being seen, strolling, lingering by the water and the presentation of various institutes along this open space axis are all possible.

The topic of climate adaptation is thus visible as a central design element in the open space. The aspects of water retention, cooling and biodiversity are thus comprehensibly integrated into the design of the campus center. The waterline is not just a design element. Rainwater is collected, purified, evaporated and redirected here. Microbiotopes are created in artificial form, as well as recreational areas by the water, which define the campus center as a green, lively and identity-forming center of the university location.
